Serial sections of hematoxylin and eosin staining (H&E) and P. multocida in situ hybridization (ISH) of variable tissues of Adélie penguin. Lung, brain and spleen of Adelie penguin (AP50) found dead. Middle-sized to large blood vessels in lung and brain contain numerous small (1–2 µm diameter) coccoid bacteria in aggregates characteristic for P. multocida, staining positive (pink) in the ISH (arrows). In the lung, a larger blood vessel is distended by an aggregate of erythrocytes with pale cytoplasm, surrounded by strongly eosinophilic material that contains aggregates of bacteria (suspect thrombus, area with thrombus indicated with arrowheads). In the spleen, the distribution of bacteria is almost diffuse
between the cells and less recognizable in the H&E.
