If you are a law professor and you do not understand the framework for the scope and limits of executive authority that Jackson laid out in Youngstown Sheet & Tube, you maybe shouldn't be teaching con law.

Who decided that these inherently porous categoriesโ€”research, teaching, and serviceโ€”should be forever in hierarchical relationship to each other, no matter the context of their application?

DOGE fires nearly all staff at U.S. Institute of Peace headquarters D.C. employees of the institute, founded and funded by Congress, received late-night termination notices, though most of its overseas staff were left in place.

They can't spell "April"?

"The termination emails were riddled with mistakes โ€” with employeesโ€™ names, the month of April and even the instituteโ€™s title misspelled in places โ€” a telling sign of the rushed and haphazard nature of the operation..."

When you look at the list of institutions they want to defund: libraries, museums, the Smithsonian, public schools, PBS, NPR, archives, you can clearly see that the real threat to an authoritarian regime is an informed and educated public

March 31 at @intellpublics.bsky.social Brian Massumi discusses his brilliant new book www.dukeupress.edu/the-personal... with Katie Stewart. Massumi asks why we still think of fascism through theories from the 30's that don't adequately account for the rise of Trump.

Georgetown law dean rebuffs DEI warning from top federal prosecutor for DC Georgetown Law Schoolโ€™s dean has rebuffed an unusual warning from the top federal prosecutor for Washington, D.C., that his office wonโ€™t hire the private schoolโ€™s students if it doesnโ€™t eliminate dive...

โ€œGiven the First Amendmentโ€™s protection of a universityโ€™s freedom to determine its own curriculum and how to deliver it, the constitutional violation behind this threat is clear, as is the attack on the Universityโ€™s mission as a Jesuit and Catholic institution,โ€ Treanor wrote.

Woodrow Wilson Should Stay Canceled The 28th President of the United States enabled segregation and vile treatment of Black federal workers. He doesnโ€™t deserve an image rehabilitation.

Remembered that I wrote about how awful Woodrow Wilson's historic segregationist purge of Black workers from federal government jobs was last year.... www.thedailybeast.com/woodrow-wils...

Weโ€™re busy working with old definitions of authoritarian forms that are continually evolving and shapeshifting. Iโ€™m uncertain why this being a coup is still a question.

12.02.2025 23:21 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I have to give it him. Given my knowledge of Latin American history, I couldnโ€™t fathom how heโ€™d gain control of the military, as is traditionally done, to mobilize a coup. Nope. He knew thereโ€™d be too many levels to clear. So he used computer/digital technology.

This is good advice.

I've found that I'm much happier if I treat social media like I treat caffeine -- and for the same reasons

1. None of either when I first wake up

2. Stop consuming both after about 2pm so I can calm my nervous system enough to get ready for bed

12.02.2025 16:25 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 48    ๐Ÿ” 7    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 3    ๐Ÿ“Œ 2

For the most part, I try to avoid going on social media first thing in the morning. But with the constant, seemingly apocalyptic attacks on government and democracy itโ€™s been hard to avoid.

12.02.2025 16:24 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I read a post elsewhere that advised, for the sake our our mental health, to treat current 24-hr news cycle like we did in the pre-social mediaโ€”where we came home from work/school and only watched the news at 6 pm and 10 pm instead of scrolling all day. And I think Iโ€™m going to adopt that stance.
