This. I'm not a BBC-basher but IMO Mason is a poor political journalist. It's not that he's 'biased' per se, it's that he reports politics as a kind of giggly spectator sport and as such is preoccupied with spectacle, talking up 'exciting' events rather than analysing them. 1/2

A bird's-eye view of a former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp showing a wide dirt pathway flanked by parallel rows of barbed-wire fences. Groups of visitors walk along the path, surrounded by the remnants of brick structures and barracks, now reduced to foundations. Green grass contrasts with the somber history of the site, as the path leads toward a guard tower in the distance.
Auschwitz was at the end of a process. We must remember that it did not start from gas chambers.
This hatred gradually developed: from ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.
Auschwitz took time.

A lovely mossy boulder with a face. I walked past this venerable stone gentleman on Dartmoor when I was beginning to write my first novel, Villager, and it whispered all 104,000 words of the book to me. So now I have to pay it all of my royalties. Unfortunately my ex-publisher stopped paying me royalties last year. Understandable, the boulder was not happy. But now I have a new publisher and the book is being republished this Thursday. So remember if you purchase a copy you will be helping a boulder to eat, pay the rent on his riverside moss garden, and feed his boulder family.
Yes it could be argued that keeping up with world events is important but alternatively can I interest you in hugging an ancient mossy boulder that looks like a face and quietly listening while it tells you stories from centuries cloaked in mist.

The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.

I just spoke with the White House after another horrific shooting by federal agents this morning. Minnesota has had it. This is sickening.
The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.

JENRICK'S BEAR HUG
BLAMING the Conservatives as well as Labour for "breaking" Britain, Robert Jenrick told his new Reform UK colleagues that "it has pained me to reach" the conclusion because "I've been a member since I was 16, served it most of my adult life".
The Tory cause isn't the only one that ardent patriot Jenrick has served. Before politics, there was a stint in the Moscow offices of US law firms including Skadden Arps, known for its work for Putin-connected oligarchs such as Roman Abramovich. Although Jenrick's time in Russia predated Putin's 2014 annexation of Crimea, much of it was after Putin had sanctioned the 2006 murder of Alexander Litvinenko on British soil - and of course the extortion behind the oligarchs riches was known to all.
Jenrick left the law to become
an "international managing director" of Christie's while it was targeting those same wealthy Russians for sales. The art company would later be found by the US Treasury to have been used by Putin's associates Boris and Arkady Rotenberg to evade US sanctions.
There's no suggestion Jenrick was personally involved in anything untoward - but it's hardly the most patriotic career path. And with Nigel Farage under pressure to sever any Reform UK links to Russia after former Welsh Reform leader Nathan Gill was jailed in November for accepting bribes from a pro-Kremlin agent, Jenrick's arrival is less than ideal.
PS: Jenrick's appeal to Farage - and to Reform treasurer Nick Candy - could be something to do with the ex-Tory's connection with one mega-rich donor.
Jenrick's 2024 Tory leadership campaign was
funded by £70,000 from Ukrainian-born billionaire Len Blavatnik via his Access Industries….
group. It so happens, the Mirror reported in 2024, that the MP's wife, lawyer Michal Berkner, had advised companies connected to Blavatnik and associates, in particular on the sale of BP's share of an oil venture to a Russian state-owned company in Moscow.
Blavatnik's company also gave £1.3m to the Conservative party centrally in 2024 - but Jenrick is the only one he has backed personally.
Might the moneybags also be persuaded to transfer his allegiance?
Interesting take from @privateeyenews.bsky.social on what may have first attracted Farage to the idea of recruiting Jenrick…
Because, let’s face it, it wasn’t his patriotism or his sparkling personality…

The new image of a portion of the Helix Nebula from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope highlights comet-like knots, fierce stellar winds, and layers of gas shed off by a dying star interacting with its surrounding environment.

A breathtaking look at a dying star. This new image of the Helix Nebula is just in from JWST.
We've never seen this level of detail, as the star's remains stream back out to interstellar space. Our Sun will look something like this 7 billion years from now. 🧪🔭
