Changes to reviewer volunteering requirement and incentives in May 2025 cycle (EMNLP 2025)
TLDR:
Update on reviews for EMNLP, which were due on June 18th: as of today, only about 80% of reviews have been completed π§
As a reminder, reviewers deemed "highly irresponsible" will not be able to commit their work to EMNLP, as per the updated ARR policy: aclrollingreview.org/incentives2025

π’ Breaking changes to EMNLP submissions! If you plan to submit, pls make sure ALL co-authors know that:
- they have to register as reviewers by May 21st (can be done as soon as a paper is submitted)
- if they get assignments, it must be done on time and acc. to guidelines. Penalties now possible!

Congrats to the winning team!

They explored gender bias in AI-generated movie scripts using the Bechdel Test β and yep, you can guess the results...

π’ Based on the recommendation from peer review committee, ARR switches from 8 to 10-week cycles. This will allow for a saner cycle schedule. See the full report here: www.aclweb.org/adminwiki/im...
The ARR website is now updated with the new submission dates: aclrollingreview.org/dates

Thanks. I am not in any official role with ARR (only the peer-review committee), but I know that they are working on it, hopefully it will be done in the next few days

You are right, it should be hopefully done within the next few days

No typo, the date is correct (see earlier comments to Antoine's post for more details)

Yeah, there were multiple pros and cons for every option we considered. Hopefully three months in advance is not too short of a notice

In a nutshell, the current 2-month system is not sustainable, not allowing enough time to chase late reviewers/ACs and have meaningful author/reviewer discussion. A compromise (which indeed loses the predictable 15th of every other month feature) is to go down to 5 cycles a year

Sorry about that! This is part of a change we (the ACL committee on peer-review) are implementing to try to improve the peer-review process: moving to 5-cycles a year. We would release a report explaining the rationale soon (which addresses your point as one of the downsides!)

Looking for emergency reviewers for October ARR. If someone can complete a review *today* (Sunday, Nov. 24), please DM meπ I have papers on efficiency, interpretability and speech

The focus on SOTA has caused a dramatic increase in the cost of AI, leading to environmental tolls and inclusiveness issues. We advocate research on efficiency in addition to accuracy (#greenai). Work w/ Jesse Dodge Noah A. Smith and Oren Etzioni
