Coal Loophole Undermines Bank Pledges to Cut Fossil Fuel Funding In the parts of the financial world that have spent the decade since the Paris Agreement trying to curb the most-polluting fossil fuel, there are actually two distinct types of coal โ€” with two very different sets of rules.

Trades that send steelmaking coal to be burned in power stations risk undermining pledges on fossil fuels made by financial institutions.

There is an impulse in moments like this to appeal to self-interest. To say: These horrors you are allowing to happen, they will come to your doorstep one day; to repeat the famous phrase about who they came for first and who they'll come for next. But this appeal cannot, in matter of fact, work. If the people well served by a system that condones such butchery ever truly believed the same butchery could one day be inflicted on them, they'd tear the system down tomorrow. And anyway, by the time such a thing happens, the rest of us will already be dead.
No, there is no terrible thing coming for you in some distant future, but know that a terrible thing is happening to you now. You are being asked to kill off a part of you that would otherwise scream in opposition to injustice. You are being asked to dismantle the machinery of a functioning conscience.
Who cares if diplomatic expediency prefers you shrug away the sight of dismembered children? Who cares if great distance from the bloodstained middle allows obliviousness. Forget pity, forget even the dead if you must, but at least fight against the theft of your soul.

The global alliance, which is backed by the UN, is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo also left the group last month.

Under capitalism, even climate collapse is just another profit opportunity. That's why it isn't being tackled.

Five years ago, as campaigners fought to get a global plastic treaty off the ground, 30 companies involved in plastic โ€“ from Exxon to Veolia โ€“ got together to launch a $1.5 billion organisation to โ€œend plastic wasteโ€.

So how have they been doing? ๐Ÿงต

Multilateral banks are key to financing the fight against global warming. Here is how they work International mega banks, funded by taxpayer dollars, are the biggest, fastest-growing source of climate finance for the developing world.

Eye-opening read on how multilateral banks have huge power to provide climate finance for clean solutions to developing countries, yet still keep many hooked on fossil fuels.

In 2018, an arm of the world bank loaned $105m towards rehabilitating coal plants in India.

Trumpโ€™s Energy Shakeup Will Spare Carbon Capture The US president-electโ€™s pick to lead the Environmental Protection Agency has embraced CCS technology.

How do we know carbon capture is a climate problem masquerading as a solution that serves to further enrich the oil industry?

One way is look at the data. Another way is to note that itโ€™s the only part of Bidenโ€™s Infrastructure Act likely to survive in 2025.
