I got so many of these recently that I finally set an email away message saying something like:

"Today and tomorrow (and possibly later) are Thayne's 'bureaucracy free' days.

For urgent *science* issues please send your note to my Subaru email address. "

A baby planet is caught feeding AB Aurigae b is a young, massive planet still pulling material in to grow

Astronomers have caught a bouncing baby exoplanet feeding and growing pretty big!

I encounter this situation periodically. Yes, the authors write the paper THEY (not you) decided to write. But the paper still has to make sense within their world: i.e. it has to be methodologically sound and the conclusions have to follow.

A referee insisting on these two things is not "mean".

23.09.2025 14:56 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

You are doing due diligence. If the missing stuff is needed to verify methodological soundness or justify the conclusions in the paper THEY wanted to write, it still needs to be added. If new things are problematic, they are problematic.

Be cordial. But critique-as-such /=mean: it's ok to insist

yes there are some. The definition of a planet is one such example. :)

This is a long conversation (I have a new paper addressing the topic for the n+1th time). Let's chat!

Regardless of what you call this object, though, it is remarkable. And should be the focus of significant follow up.

yet the peer reviewed lit supports this exact position: i.e. that a planet is intrinsically tied to how it formed (so not quite a chair analogy). It's the reason why the direct imaging community largely thinks HR 8799 bcd were the first imaged planets, not 2M 1207 B.

depends on who you ask. I would say no, for reasons described here:

arxiv.org/abs/2205.05696

tl;dr: mass ratio of ~0.5-0.6. This is typical of binaries formed from the star formation process: not that unusual. Not a planet.

Demonstrating Improved Contrast on the Roman Coronagraph with Spatial Linear Dark Field Control The baseline contrast floor from the Roman Coronagraph's High-Order Wavefront Sensing and Control strategy likely degrades over the course of time, requiring periodic recalibration of the dark hole. Our Roman Coronagraph white paper on trying Spatial Linear Dark Field Control (SLDFC) during the technology demonstration phase.

This will be challenging to make work, but the payoff will be worth it. Medium-high risk, high reward. YOLO.
