02.10.2025 20:09 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I got so many of these recently that I finally set an email away message saying something like:
"Today and tomorrow (and possibly later) are Thayne's 'bureaucracy free' days.
For urgent *science* issues please send your note to my Subaru email address. "
Astronomers have caught a bouncing baby exoplanet feeding and growing pretty big!

30.09.2025 15:56 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I encounter this situation periodically. Yes, the authors write the paper THEY (not you) decided to write. But the paper still has to make sense within their world: i.e. it has to be methodologically sound and the conclusions have to follow.
A referee insisting on these two things is not "mean".
You are doing due diligence. If the missing stuff is needed to verify methodological soundness or justify the conclusions in the paper THEY wanted to write, it still needs to be added. If new things are problematic, they are problematic.
Be cordial. But critique-as-such /=mean: it's ok to insist
Congratudolences on your new position!

22.09.2025 01:30 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0yes there are some. The definition of a planet is one such example. :)
This is a long conversation (I have a new paper addressing the topic for the n+1th time). Let's chat!
Regardless of what you call this object, though, it is remarkable. And should be the focus of significant follow up.
yet the peer reviewed lit supports this exact position: i.e. that a planet is intrinsically tied to how it formed (so not quite a chair analogy). It's the reason why the direct imaging community largely thinks HR 8799 bcd were the first imaged planets, not 2M 1207 B.
18.09.2025 21:06 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0depends on who you ask. I would say no, for reasons described here:

tl;dr: mass ratio of ~0.5-0.6. This is typical of binaries formed from the star formation process: not that unusual. Not a planet.
A firm bipartisan statement to protect NASA if we go into a CR.

Our Roman Coronagraph white paper on trying Spatial Linear Dark Field Control (SLDFC) during the technology demonstration phase.
This will be challenging to make work, but the payoff will be worth it. Medium-high risk, high reward. YOLO.
Excellent advice
