02.08.2025 16:29 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0This article makes a good case for not relying on digital tools when writing. But as someone who works in #appliedlinguistics, I also see it as a testament to the role of #language in crafting and performing #identity.

Thank you!! It looks awesome! I was actually wondering what those tables look like when printed (I only read online so far).
Anyway, I am definitely adding this article to my socioling class next time! :)

"If you think the topic is not worthy of study, you should decline to do the review"
Exactly! It can be helpful to remember that editors don't send it out if it doesn't have any chance of getting published.
tl;dr: don't be a jerk when reviewing!
Here's something I don't often share on my BlueSky profile: me playing the #piano. All work and no play makes Jae a dull girl, after all.

Was looking thru my 2011 MA thesis on #codeswitching & noticed something...
Each excerpt is 4 lines: Line 1 is the utterance; Line 2 is the gloss, Line 3 is English. Line 4 is paraling info. Lines 1-3 are in the same font, line 3 is in italics and Line 4 is .... wait for it.... in Comic Sans.
😅
This term I’m teaching 2 courses on #Japanese #sociolinguistics. On the 1st day I asked students to tell me what questions they have. One asked “What problem does sociolinguistics solve?”
I’ll definitely be asking them this at the mid-point & again at the end of the semester! How would you answer?
There are definitely arguments for making linguistics a standalone dept. But having linguists in depts w/ non-linguist colleagues also has lots of benefits. I do Japanese sociolinguistics and I’m in dept of East Asian Languages & Cultures, w/ colleagues across disciplines, and it’s really great!

17.12.2024 18:34 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0The problem is, whoever is doing the fact checking has to know enough to spot any errors. If I'm hiring a lawyer, it's because I don't know enough to do it myself, so I'm less likely to be able to successfully fact check, or error-check, the AI output.
