anyway overall agree I think, even if I quibble with details.

the uniquely English conception of short and long vowels drives me up the fucking wall to this day. that's not how English works. we don't *have* vowel length. we have Germanic and Latinate vowels, and different levels of stress on vowels. trying to simplify that into "long/short" drives me mad

for what it's worth, I have always railed against phonics because I learned how to read before I ever encountered phonics. (combination of my mom flailing around with some flashcards with dedication despite me never showing any signs of getting it and reading hymnals in church I guess lol)

wait what? they didn't have dictionaries in my school. (aside from the big one in the library that seemed to be for decoration to all the other students) we didn't even have vocab lessons until we began standardized test prep lmao

I have always been tempted by gender anarchism/abolitionism personally lol, no categories need be recognized, simply how each person you interact with wishes to conduct and describe themself. but alas, that's *also* fighting uphill lol

also, given that you *are* inventing a definition, and plopping it where a term already exists that people have been using the whole time, yeah, I can see that some hackles would be raised.

I'm not saying you're wrong to invent a term, simply that conflict with people who haven't come across your new definition is natural. perhaps a compelling case will be made. but you're not using this word the way that it's been taught in schools for years now, for example. it's an uphill battle.

"Trans" is not short for "transition", it's Latin for "across". the reason why transgender and transsexual are synonymous traditionally is because they describe the same distance or disparity between sex and gender, just from different perspectives. using "transsexual" this way is new.

but I wholeheartedly sympathize with the feeling that terminology squabbles can be *really* unwelcoming and make people feel like they're not invited into categories or spaces with fierce guarding at the gates.

I would like to let them speak rather than try and define what they're thinking, because it's quite possible I've already interpreted them wrong, and I'd rather not draw conclusions that haven't been stated on a dicey subject like this.

that's a radically different definition than I've heard for the last decade. roping off GNC from trans is *weird*. also, framing it in terms of *perception* is weird, I've *always* heard "lived experience" not "social acceptance".
