Also: I don't see how any intelligent and lucid person could watch this press conference and conclude that the president of the United States has anywhere near sufficient cognitive ability to properly execute the duties of his office.

The legendary Autumn Bowl private skate park was in a warehouse down the way. I would often stop by the PF for after session beers before heading back to the LES. Cool spot will be missed.

Some of his readers have asked Mike Masnick @mmasnick.bsky.social why his technology news site, Tech Dirt, has been covering politics so intensely lately. www.techdirt.com/2025/03/04/w...

I cannot recommend Mike's reply enough. It's exactly what readers need to hear, what journalists need to do.

Opinion | I’ve Covered Authoritarians Abroad. Trump’s Actions Look Familiar. (Gift Article) Trump’s actions remind me of authoritarians I’ve covered for four decades around the globe.

"Authoritarians try to crush independent referees and civil society institutions, including news organizations, universities, statistical agencies and central banks." www.nytimes.com/2025/02/15/o...

Grouping newsrooms with central banks, universities, the Bureau of Labor Statistics gets it right.

Yes. But they are missing that much of this has to be performative. That’s what Trump is great at and Dems are awful at.

You can’t just tell voters , you have to know how to sell voters.

Trump gives sales pitches, Dems show charts. One goes viral. The other is ignored and forgotten

From Jay Rosen's 2011 lecture, "Why political coverage is broken."

The quest for innocence in political reporting means the desire to be manifestly agenda-less and thus β€œprove” in the way you describe things that journalism is not an ideological trade. Which can get in the way of describing things. He said, she said doesn’t tell us who’s distorting the picture more. It is neutral on where the reality is, but reality is not something journalists can afford to be neutral about!

Political journalism should help us get our bearings in a world of confusing claims and counter-claims. But instead we have savviness, the dialect of insiders bringing us into their games. Nothing is more characteristic of the savvy style than statements like β€œin politics, perception is reality.” Doesn’t that statement make you mad? Whenever I hear it, I want to interrupt and say, β€œNo, no, no. You have it wrong. In politics, perception isn’t reality. Reality is reality!”

But then I stop myself. Because I realize I sound like a lunatic.

JMart of Politco doing a hit on MSNBC reminded me that he is the smug poster boy for Jay Rosen’s β€œSavvy” political journalism. Never the stakes always the political game. Bet he’d give a kidney to have been on the bus…Mears wouldn’t have given him the lede.

But it does shine a light on the question of where do these legacy media aka newspapers fit in the modern worldβ€”are they a form of creator house for news or do they shrink back down to fighting for local eyes and dollars with the next Washington Star?
