I don't blame anyone at the ATS. Indeed, many of my American colleagues are probably facing their own challenges from this administration. I hope that this decision, along with the same decision from other academics in Canada and internationally, sends a signal to the administration.

But as I focus on spending my money in Canada, I can't in good conscience travel and spend Canadian funding, from Canadian tax payers, in a country where the leader is threatening my country and it's closest ally. This is where I am making my stand.

ATS is where I grew up as a scientist, attending every meeting since 2011 when I entered graduate school. I have made friends and met close colleagues and collaborators at the ATS. The people I have met there helped me start my own lab. I will miss the opportunity to connect and present this year

It is with sadness that I have opted to cancel my registration for the American Thoracic Society meeting this May. I cannot fathom traveling to the US with the ongoing rhetoric regarding annexation Canada by the current president of the US.

Today we're sharing more about the Biology of Breathing (BoB) theme! BoB brings together investigators to study pediatric lung health and disease.

Oxylipin Profiling of Airway Structural Cells Is Unique and Modified by Relevant Stimuli Oxylipins, diverse lipid mediators derived from fatty acids, play key roles in respiratory physiology, but the contribution of lung structural cells to this diverse profile is not well understood. This study aimed to characterize the oxylipin profiles of airway smooth muscle (ASM), lung fibroblasts (HLF), and epithelial (HBE) cells and define how they shift when they are exposed to stimuli related to contractility, fibrosis, and inflammation. Using HPLC-MS/MS, 162 oxylipins were measured in baseline media from cultured human ASM, HLF, and HBE cells as well as after stimulation with modulators of contractility and central regulators of fibrosis/inflammation. At the baseline, ASM and HLF cells had the most similar oxylipin profiles, dominated by oxylipins from cytochrome P450 (CYP450) epoxygenase metabolites. TGFβ stimulation of HLF suppressed CYP450-derived oxylipins, while ASM stimulation increased prostaglandin production. HBE showed the most distinct baseline profile enriched with cyclooxygenase (COX)-derived oxylipins. TGFβ stimulation of HBE increased the level of several oxylipins from CYP450 epoxygenases. These findings highlight the importance of CYP450 oxylipins, which are relatively unexplored in the context of respiratory physiology. By resolving these oxylipin profiles, we enable future respiratory research to understand the function of these oxylipins in regulating physiology, especially in the context of modifying contraction and inflammation.

We found that the profile of oxylipins differs significantly between structural cells of the airway and that this profile can be modified by stimulation with compounds that modulate cell contractility, inflammation, and fibrosis.

Finally, to wrap up 2024, we had our manuscript detailing the oxylipin profile of structural airway cells and how it changes with stimulation accepted in the Journal of Proteome Research. Many thanks to all our collaborators and the funding agency, NSERC.

Secondly, I spent the better part of 2024 working on, and fretting over my tenure and promotion application. Happy to report that I have been granted tenure, and hoping to hear positive news about promotion in early 2025. Couldn't have done it without the support of my lab, CHRIM, or my many mentors

2024 ended with some great news for myself and the lab. Starting with our first MSc student completing her thesis on how maternal diabetes influences offspring sensitivity to the harmful effects of cigarettes. Big congratulations to Sriyani for all the hard work and preserverance 🎉🎊

We are searching for a PhD/MSc student (with PhD transfer) starting Sept 2024 to work on our CIHR funded project unraveling how to prenatal diabetes influences airway smooth muscle function.
