I’ve followed him on and off (more off) over a few years. He questions plenty of things in a game, and asks his community to help figure out what is going on. Pretty passive, he often reaffirms he only knows as much as he can see and show.

I’m not saying he shouldn’t do better, but it sounds like he’s listening and taking things on board. Isn’t that a good thing? That’s a bit different to supposed damage control. That sounds like someone is taking pause on what they said in the moment and admitting fault.
