Kaya toast has more than kaya in it - there’s usually a blob of butter … the name of which, in Hokkien, literally translates to “cow oil” or “cow grease”.

A visiting friend was thrilled and tickled to learn the coconut spread on their morning toast was called “kaya”, a Malay word meaning “rich”.

“It *does* taste rich. That’s perfect!” She said, looking pleased.
