12:00 noon Monday, May 5 - Faculty at Columbia, Tufts and Georgetown begin vigils for abducted students and colleagues
It has been two months since Columbia graduate Mahmoud Khalil, Georgetown instructor Badar Khan Suri, and Tufts graduate student Rümeysa Oztürk were abducted by the Department of Homeland Security. Their professors and colleagues will begin holding weekly vigils until they are returned

New York City, Washington, DC, and Somerville, MA - It has been two months since recent Columbia graduate Mahmoud Khalil was abducted from the lobby of his apartment building as his pregnant wife watched in horror. It has been seven weeks since Georgetown postdoctoral researcher Badar Khan Suri was seized outside his home. It has been six weeks since Tufts graduate student Rümeysa Öztürk was snatched from the street by masked agents. Still held in detention in Texas and Louisiana, these scholars are accused of no crime, facing only baseless charges of antisemitism for speaking against Israel's devastating war in Gaza. University leaders have yet to forcefully condemn these attacks or the lies behind them. But Mahmoud, Badar and Rümeysa are not forgotten by their colleagues, professors, and fellow students. And we will gather every week on campus to bear witness to these abductions until every one of them comes home.
What: In the tradition of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo and the many other Mothers'/People's movements protesting political abduction and disappearance across the globe, faculty and staff at Columbia, Tufts and Georgetown universities are initiating a weekly vigil, holding photos of abducted students, colleagues, and alumni - Mahmoud Khalil, Rümeysa Oztürk, and Badar Kan Suri. We demand their immediate release and return, and call for accountability and justice.

Columbia, Tufts, and Georgetown faculty will be hosting vigils Monday for those abducted by the Trump admin — Mahmoud Khalil, Badar Khan Suri, and Rumeysa Ozturk.

Will gather every week until they’re free

Long waits, waves of calls, website crashes: Social Security is breaking down A flood of cuts led by Elon Musk has sent the agency into chaos as a new commissioner prepares to take charge.

The federal agency that delivers $1.5T a year in earned benefits to 73M retired workers, their survivors, & poor & disabled Americans is engulfed in crisis—further undermining the already struggling org’s ability to provide reliable & timely service to vulnerable customers.

It's a "cycle of doom."

On April 20th, 2025, the United States will Cross the Point of No Return. That’s the day Donald Trump’s advisory committee is expected to release its findings on whether he should invoke the Insurrection Act — a move that would allow him to deploy the military domestically…

I don't know how likely this unfolding is, but everyone should read it and decide for themselves. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
