Trump’s bumbling, bizarre National Guard stunt in Portland offers lessons for the Bay Area The president threatened again this week to deploy National Guard troops to San Francisco. Here’s what the Bay Area can learn from Portland’s ordeal.

Trump's environmental protection budget cuts appear to target San Francisco Bay It's unclear which projects are likely to face the steep cuts, but some believe the broader purpose is to punish the Bay Area.

"In the last 5 years, we've made huge progress, and there's so much more to do to make San Francisco Bay healthy and resilient for people and wildlife. These cuts put a threat to all of that progress."

Rep. Laurel Libby, R-Auburn, recently used my second-place finish in the 1,600-meter run, and that of my teammate in the 800-meter run, to malign Soren Stark-Chessa, the trans-identified athlete who finished first.

One of the reasons I chose to run cross-country and track is the community: Teammates cheering each other on, athletes from different schools coming together, and the fact that personal improvement is valued as much as, if not more than, the place we finish.

Last Friday, I ran the fastest 1,600-meter race I have ever run in middle school or high school track and earned varsity status by my school’s standards. I am extremely proud of the effort I put into the race and the time that I achieved. The fact that someone else finished in front of me didn’t diminish the happiness I felt after finishing that race. I don’t feel like first place was taken from me. Instead, I feel like a happy day was turned ugly by a bully who is using children to make political points.

We are all just kids trying to make our way through high school. Participating in sports is the highlight of high school for some kids. No one was harmed by Soren’s participation in the girls’ track meet, but we are all harmed by the hateful rhetoric of bullies, like Rep. Libby, who want to take sports away from some kids just because of who they are.

I don't know what this means, but I'm the one who wrote a fully updated, 624-page hurricane response plan at FEMA that took over 2 years of work and careful coordination among state and federal agencies. He could start by studying that.

I don’t want to read about a former President’s mental decline because a journalist got a book deal.

I want to read a report about the current President’s mental decline by a journalist brave enough to speak out now.

For 25 years, volunteers have kept SF Bay thriving. But the Bay needs care year-round, not just during Earth Month.

$5 a month = 15 lbs of trash removed from the shoreline. That's bottles, wrappers, and pollution kept out of the Bay. Power the next 25 years of impact. savesfbay.org/bay-sustainer/

Cory Booker’s 25-Hour Speech Was a Stunt. It Worked. The New Jersey senator’s display of stamina wasn't just for the Democratic base. It was a message to his colleagues in the Senate.

"Booker can help rebrand his party as less risk-averse and more willing to try … something. He can rebrand himself, just as the old and ineffective guard falters. Booker’s speech was raw and visceral and real and angry. He did something. Now his colleagues and American voters must do more."

Absolutely chilling interview by @chrismurphyct.bsky.social in the New Yorker.

Their strategy is to break the institutions that serve as pillars of our democracy β€” media, judiciary, lawyers, Dems’ ability to raise money & mobilize volunteers β€” to ensure we can’t win elections.

We must stop them.
