Illustration of bulbasaur from pokemon. They are basking in the moonlight like that one scene from the original anime. The colors mainly consist of shades of green and blue. There are some pastel flowers on the ground

Comic. [planets and astronomical bodies in various shapes with comments pointing to them] Typical Exoplanet System: Giant planet orbiting so close that it’s actually rolling on the star’s surface; Hot Jupiter; Mini Neptune; Planet that could be habitable, if there’s a form of life that hates water but loves acid and being on fire; Cold Jupiter; Potentially habitable void; Hot Mars; Planet that may actually be in the habitable zone, according to a very optimistic modeling paper by some desperate postdocs; There’s a pulsar here but it’s probably fine; A waterworld paradise with beautiful oceans and warm— Wait, no, we just got new measurements, it’s a hellish steam oven; Mini Pluto; Earthlike data artifact; Wet Saturn; Either a gas giant or a fist-sized rock, depending which calibration method you use; Faint dust cloud that will cause several papers to be retracted; Somehow this whole system is smaller than the orbit of Mercury?!; Planet whose surface may host conditions suitable for rocks

Three tile image with two images in top row. Top row: In the centre is an elliptical galaxy, seen as an oval-shaped glow around a small bright core. Around this is wrapped a broad band of light, appearing like a spiral galaxy stretched and warped into a ring, with bright blue lines drawn through it where the spiral arms have been stretched into circles. A few distant objects are visible around the ring on a black background. The image has been annotated to point out the foreground galaxy as well as the background spiral. In the bottom row: Diagram showing the JWST on one side with light being focused into it from a distant galaxy, via an intermediate galaxy. The Galaxy appears as a ring as light scattered in all directions is delivered to the focal point.

Updated explainer diagram version!

Still can't get over the structures we see in this lens. Physics allows us to see around corners!

Someone said to me last night that this looks like a half-cut avocado, and now I cannot unsee it! 🥑

Sea of stars and galaxies against a black sky

Sea of stars and galaxies against a black sky

A collage of 9x5 squares each with a different galaxy. Some are spiral, some are edge on, and some appear to be galaxy mergers.

Today, ESA released a giant batch of survey data from the Euclid Telescope! Euclid has already spotted 26 million galaxies, & that was just in one week of observations 🤯

Here’s the Deep Field South view & an example of the galaxies being catalogued. Beautiful! Good at making you feel smol.

A comic. Bex is staring into space with a blank and tired expression. The text reads, "There are so many things I need to do right now. Why am I not doing any of them?! I'm making everything harder for myself in the long run... ...please just do SOMETHING!"

as the text gets more frantic, a glitch effect spreads over Bex, increasing with her desperation.

My big project: The Death Generator.
It's a tool for making fake video game screenshots, just fill in new text and it'll give you a (generally) pixel-accurate image back, the correct fonts and everything.
