We have managed capitalism here in the UK (and much of Europe) and none of those are true. Your problem isn’t capitalism. Your problem is who so many US folk voted for.

There seems to be a great deal of hypocrisy from objectors. β€˜It’s years away!’ So how many years away was viable green energy in the early days? β€˜It’s not safe, look at Chernobyl’! How many other aspects of your life do you judge on 1960’s technology?

Except some of the latest technologies don’t need to be located next to water. This is a classic case of judging technology based upon old versions of the technology.

In the last 60 years we have moved forward in terms of both gay and womens rights. We must protect those. I would regard the protection of those as being anything but right wing. And there is the problem. Are we protecting our values or the values of other cultures/religions? They often clash.

I’m not convinced. The US has long been two countries and is incredibly insular. We also have a different electoral system that suppresses extremes (first past the post). We are a far more diverse population. The fly in the ointment is mainstream politics that trades votes for avoiding issues.

Not to mention in the previous 20 years the population doubled.

Which is why centrist politicians need to ensure that they do not hand the narrative to more extreme right wing parties. Starmer is doing a great job of doing precisely that. Tories seem to have lost the plot.

πŸ“ŒThree soldiers are dead tonight. Their Commander in Chief took no responsibility for it, and didn’t show a shred of empathy.
He is a tiny man, a coward, completely unfit for duty, and an embarrassment to all of us who served.
I spit on him.

It’s a good point. There is a fascination with the suffering in Gaza that isn’t equally applied to suffering elsewhere and one of the consequences is awful antisemitism.

I’m not sure where you are based, but here in the UK there is plenty of noise, especially at the moment. The head of the Church of England recently had to resign because of covering up abuse. A local bishop is now in prison etc etc. Agree about the antisemitism. It’s likes it’s almost cool. Awful.

In other words ethical leadership. Good companies set targets based on a balance of values and objectives. In our case safety failings would veto any personal financial gain. Boeing clearly had a different ethical stance. Fortunately we flew Airbus aircraft.

It certainly does, but something like 50% of that regulation is actually internal albeit it driven by external law….if that makes sense. In other words we had a big compliance team that would need a particularly ballsy Exec team to ignore. We didn’t ignore them. It’s cultural

Fair point, but equally chasing profit increases efficiency, lean philosophy etc. I’ve operated in private and public sector (in finance roles generally) and in my experience private is more efficient. Needs ethical leadership though and that definitely varies in quality!

Would a focus on safety mean anything without the additional funding to support it? Nationalisation would not raise extra cash so where does that cash come from? Would the govt really be better at running a water company? Lots of good questions.

30.01.2025 18:18 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The share price vs safety is of course a good question but subtle. I was director of one of our airlines for years. Safety was number one, always. For ethical and financials reasons. No better way of crashing share price than by…..crashing.

The government funding is usually backed by bonds which are the same yield as dividends of utility companies right now. Unless you know of funding sources cheaper than government bonds? Exec pay wouldn’t likely change much and even then is in the noise.
