The post is saying "do as you please" and nothing more. OP is simply saying books are meant to be read instead of displayed, and if reading yours keeps them in good condition, that's great. But if you like to carry it in a tight pocket and it takes some damage in order to read it... That's great too

The spine is damaged literally the moment you open the book. Your book doesn't have to be tattered and dog eared to show it was loved and read, but it's certainly not gonna be kept pristine.
