I know I don’t know for sure, but:

I got the impression that it was more or less simultaneous with the film, gathering that from the review & the Wikipedia page which gave me the sense that both were independent adaptations of a screenplay before the film was greenlighted. 🤷‍♀️

I'd missed that there was a novelization, thanks! (Long time fan of the film.)
