Protectionist policies can be very important for a country to build up an industry or protect itself from dumping. Trade wars are another beast entirely and will only hurt working/middle-class Americans who will lose jobs and purchasing power.

No trade war will restore US manufacturing, US prosperity, or US strength as a world power. Without strong trade partnerships or policies that prioritize US workers, the world, including China, will move on together and without us.

China Announces a Ban on Rare Minerals to the U.S. The move escalates supply chain warfare and comes a day after the Biden administration expanded curbs on the sale of advanced American technology to China.

โ€œSales of gallium, germanium, antimony and so-called superhard materials to the United States would be halted immediately on the grounds that they have dual military and civilian uses, Chinaโ€™s Ministry of Commerce said.โ€ www.nytimes.com/2024/12/03/w...

A new version of my Excluded but Equal paper is up. This paper is part of my ongoing research agenda studying exclusions from work law (labor and employment law).
Here, my focus is on the equal protection arguments underlying/justifying those exclusions.

GUN COUNTRY was shortlisted for the 2024 Cundill History Prize

I'm up for introductions! I'm a historian of the United States who has a hard time staying in one lane and has written about everything from anime to guns. My recent book is GUN COUNTRY, which is about how our gun culture today emerged not out of the 18th century but from the Cold War era

I am working on a book "A Faithful President: The Founders vs. the Originalists" on presidential power, the mythology of the "unitary executive theory," and an alternative history emphasizing checks & balances.

I've put together a Presidential Power Pack (#POTUS Scholars):

As a newcomer to this space I am looking forward to connecting with interesting people, discussing all-things political economy, and hopefully stimulating conversation about books, ideas, and finding sanity amidst the chaos.

My new book, The Forbidden Garden of Leningrad, is out today. It tells the story of the botanists who worked at the world's first seed bank during the 900-day siegeโ€“โ€“and how they were faced with a terrible decision: eat the fruits of their research to survive, or protect the collection for science.

The most important thing in writing is to finish. A finished thing can be fixed. A finished thing can be published. A finished thing can be made into a movie.

An unfinished thing is just a dream. And dreams fade if you don't hold on tight enough.

So finish the thing.
