They certainly don’t believe it. It is an ideological ploy to get non-experts to believe it. They’ve been doing this for decades, eg Reagan’s “welfare queen.” Ideology is the key means by which a leader/party maintains support while passing legislation contrary to people’s interests.

Striking that among the GOP talking points is “able-bodied” a term reaching back to the Poor Laws.

Senate Republicans are calling to cut Medicaid and CHIP by over $1 trillion, growing to an 18% cut by 2034.

This would be at least four times the size of the largest Medicaid cut in history.

This is a classically neoliberal bill. Neoliberalism is generally unpopular, which is why they have to lie about what it actually does.

And would certainly fail a citizenship test.

I’m extremely confident that Trump, and a good many in his cabinet, would fail a US citizenship test.
