FRIEREN (2023) yes it's anime not a movie shut up I make my own rules.
A bittersweet fantasy anime about friendships and how love changes us. Grief. Enjoying the journey. Old wins and wounds coming back to haunt you. Dry wit abounds. The first 5 or so episodes are the best IMO.

followed Poor Things w its predecessor - a Stone/Lanthimos double feature (seems dir loves fisheyes). A slow-burn microcosm of 18th C. Britain. Power, interdependence & manipulation between 3 women. Hoult lays groundwork for future role as Emperor Peter III in The Great.

POOR THINGS (2023)
absurdist, dreamlike, raw. I can see how this film was based on a book inspired by Frankenstein. Beautiful set design. At times, I was intrigued, at others mildly disturbed. Here the strange shall find a mirror. Here we confront the discomforting: unafraid, with inquisitive eyes.

LONGLEGS (2024)
Well-framed shots (gawd, the trees!). Lovely use of red and white. Nic & Maika both give great performances. Overall: polarising, yes. Perhaps a tad convoluted. Occasionally accidentally comedic (?). Revisits familiar tropes in more interesting ways than most run-of-the-mill horror.

MICKEY 17 (2025)
Duality: ignorance/arrogance, sacrifice/selfish, nihilism/absurdism; at times it's blatantly, uncomfortably familiar (esp. Marshall). Some great story details shown in fore&background simultaneously. Ending left my cynicism squirming. Perhaps that's the real horror here.

ハウス HOUSE (1977)
Went into it blind apart from hearing it was 'whimsical', 'outlandish', 'spooky' ...good enough descriptors for me! Spent the first third searching for some deep meaning before realising that's a pointless endeavour. Then it steadily got more... bananas (ha). Best enjoyed w alcohol.

NOSFERATU (2024)
Cinematography dripping in gorgeously bleak tones. Lily-Rose's physicality in key scenes was excellent. For me, Bill's Orlok wasn't as scary as the OG 1922, but he embodied the role so well that I forgot it was him. And what a finale! Overall a stunning offering to the gothic genre.
