it was really frustrating welcoming these new players into the fold, helping them brainstorm characters, make it fit the lore, be accommodating, etc only for them to play for 2 sessions and go "oh fuck this is boring nerd shit i hate it" and dip. doesn't happen anymore lol i'm guarded who i let play

thankfully this has abated a little bit because d&d isn't really in vogue anymore but it got to the point i had to tell aspiring players "you know you're going to be sitting around for 4 hours mostly talking to goblins and asking about the thickness of stone walls right"

i think one of the most aggravating experiences i ran into when getting into ttrpgs is learning to parse the difference between people who wanted to play d&d from the people who wanted To Play D&D™ as a cultural activity but then immediately tuned out when you started describing tavern interiors

this is an fdm print and other than a few blemished areas (i had to manually paint back in the thigh panel lines because they failed to fully render) this is fantastic when painted up

there are people who play d&d whose games are exactly like this (i know because i've met them) and they have fun and more power to them. i think for those people these systems are secondary to everything else so "play another game"-ing them is fruitless

i'm not sure if i exactly fall in line with the rhetoric that d&d is only good for slaughtering monsters & exploring ruins (it is certainly best at those things) but i will say as a queer person i just find this type of marketing cynical & overdone. but also lots of people eat it up so lol

very funny seeing everyone collectively scoff & roll their eyes at right-wingers fuming over that pinkwashed d&d art only for everyone to pause and go "wait, this does suck but for totally different reasons"

people usually use unwanted tcgs for this sort of thing (which is a great option too) but if you keep an eye out you'll find really nice sources for tokens elsewhere too

if you think these are too specific to ever use for a game you'd be surprised. always nice when your players do something unexpected and you have a token that Kinda Sorta looks like an npc you never thought you'd need for an encounter

before i ever toss out excess packaging to blurays/video games/etc i always take a quick look to see if i can repurpose some of the nice art as tokens for d&d/ttrpgs. since they're from industrial-grade printers the quality is always nicer tok. try it!

3d printing's low accessibility, GW's relatively consistent quality compared to 3d modelers who have wildly different standards/tastes, and likely also that the entire ritual of buying a GW kit, unboxing it, and snipping it off the runner is simply more satisfying than cleaning up resin/FDM models

i used it with some contrast paint for added transparency but i'm wondering if that had something to do with it. "for best results use with our brand of paint" is pretty standard marketing verbiage and i can't imagine it really makes that much a difference with this medium... right? lol

hmm i tried newsh on these minis after all the hubbub i heard and ngl i'm pretty underwhelmed. paint did not remove easily from the minis at all and there was a lot more staining than i expected. might as well have just used a regular wash. anyone else had issues with it?
