🌠 If you've ever wanted to see a meteor shower try and spot this one! On 12-13 August the Perseid meteor shower peaks with up to 100 meteors per hour.

🧭 Look toward the east in the early hours, around 04:00.

A nebula with a bright star at its center. The nebula has three distinct layers, and the pattern in the layers repeats in a way that implies there are more layers outside the image boundaries, though they would be faint. The shape of the nebula is something like nesting yin yangs, with the center smallest one bright and dense, shining, smooth and golden. The middle one is orange and textured like a sherpa blanket. The largest, outer shell is fainter, and red like an ember. Its texture has softened along with its dissipation into space. There are some small stars speckled around the image, and one annoyingly bright, spiky one that's got too many colors because of the way the light spreads from point sources through the telescope's optics. A pale haze of grayish cloud also covers the scene, but it is sheer and translucent.

This astonishing reptile lived during the Middle Triassic in Europe and it possessed an amazing crest made of plume-like structures!

The spacecraft will be launched in 2029 into a parking orbit, lying in wait for a suitable target – a pristine comet from the Oort Cloud, or, unlikely but highly appealing, an interstellar object. πŸ§ͺπŸ”

The young female astronomer who worked out what the sun is made of 100 years ago, Cecilia Payne deduced that the sun is mainly made of hydrogen - but was encouraged to downplay her findings by her PhD supervisor. Mike Sutton takes up the story

One hundred years ago, scientists assumed the Sun was made of pretty much the same mix of elements as the Earth. But PhD student Cecilia Payne’s careful analysis showed her the strong spectral lines must mean the Sun contains vast quantities of atomic hydrogen.
