White-tailed deer fawns (Artiodactyla: Cervidae: Odocoileus virginianus) along the Inland Marsh Trail. Fawns typically hide in brush while their mothers are off grazing. These two were on the move because they were following their mother. Indiana Dunes National Park, Indiana, 11 Aug 2012.

Canyonlands biscuitroot (Apiaceae: Lomatium latilobum) is limited to isolated areas of southeast Utah and extreme west-central Colorado. This rare perennial grows only in crevices and slot canyons with loose sandy soil formed from weathered sandstone. Arches National Park, Utah, 15 Apr 2014.

Common whitetails (Odonata: Libellulidae: Plathemis lydia) inhabit much of North America. Like other dragonflies they tend to stay near water, where they lay eggs bearing their aquatic young. While males do have a white tail, females like this one do not. Blissfield Michigan, 30 Jun 2012.

The Castle contains rocks spanning most of the Triassic Period (201-252 mya). The Wingate Sandstone on top is the youngest. The gray mudstone and volcanic ash of the Chinle Formation is next. The bottom is thin red beds of Moenkopi sandstone and shale. Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, 11 Apr 2014.

Adult tortoise beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cassidini) have a rather unique appearance. Some resemble lady beetles and some look more metallic, but what’s really interesting about them is that most species have translucent shells. Palmyra Michigan, 03 Aug 2014.

Northern leopard frogs (Anura: Ranidae: Lithobates pipiens) are often encountered near ponds and marshes. As with other amphibians they lay their eggs in slow or standing water, and their young tadpoles feed and develop in these aquatic environments. Clayton Michigan, 04 Sep 2013.

Like most adults, the larvae of firefly beetles (Coleoptera: Lampyridae) can glow. While many adults use their bioluminescence for courtship, larvae use it to warn potential predators of their distasteful defensive chemicals. Blissfield Michigan, 31 Oct 2010.
