07.10.2025 13:02 β π 748 π 124 π¬ 24 π 1S Hutchinson, English: Slave Traffic (1793). Royal Museums Greenwich, PR1979-11 This painting refers to the story of Inkle and Yarico, first published in 1711. In the story, the 'native' woman, Yarico, rescues an Englishman Mr Inkle after a shipwreck. They fall in love and live together in the woods, before a passing ship brings them to Barbados. The picture shows Inkle at the moment that he sells Yarico into slavery. She has just told him that she is pregnant with his child, in the hope that this will make him change his mind. Inkle asks the trader for more money instead. Sentimental stories like this often exposed the cruelties of slavery, and they were used in the growing art and literature of the abolition movement. It is signed by the artist and dated.

I understand that Kemi Badenoch has claimed Terry Pratchett as her favourite author.
Please no one tell her what his books are about or indicate the fabulous exhibition currently at Worcester Art Gallery, I do not want to run into her there. Everyone else who loves Sir Terry should go.
Iβm old enough to remember when a comment like this would have been a resigning matterβ¦

Fascist-adjacent βjournalistsβ help by insisting that we shouldnβt call fascists facsists.

Nigel Farage doesnβt think the Prime Minister should have free speech in this country. But heβll tell foreigners that yours is somehow under threat from the Prime Minister. Heβs a whiny little liar. Always has been. Always will be.

Nigel Farage (Dulwich), Danny Kruger (Eton), Richard Tice (Uppingham) and Isabel Oakeshott (Gordonstoun) aren't 'standing up to the elite'. They are the elite.
