The latest issue of Dappled Things has a painting by Emily Pastor that is very striking. I had a slow day at work, so I tried to do what she did with mixed results. You can get a copy of magazine for only $10 that comes with several of her other paintings (and one of my stories).

Exile’s Journey Why I write (and publish) amateur verse

"I find that many of my poems respond, either implicitly or explicitly, to my persistent sense of displacement. There are reasons particular to my life that contribute to this sense, but in many ways, the human condition is one of exile." currentpub.com/2025/02/19/e...

A Losing Hand β€” Dappled Things This happened in the summer of 1977. Past wheat harvest, so late June on a Sunday evening after church. The Gerbers invited us for supper and dominoes and prayer. The sun didn’t set til nearly ten and...

The kind folks over at Dappled Things published a new story of mine. It's about playing dominoes, sort of.

Marking the Year on Two Calendars: An Interview with Matthew Miller - Front Porch Republic Knowledge is a path to love, and so I’m bound to say that the book did change my affection for the place.

I interviewed Matt Miller about his book β€œLeaves of Healing: A Year in the Garden” out now from @bellepointpress.bsky.social. The book works through two calendarsβ€”gardening & liturgical. The interview is up at Front Porch Republic.

I have a poem in the latest issue of New Verse Review. It’s a rich issue full of very good poems. I haven’t figured out which of the poets are here on Bluesky yet, but maybe you can.

My top two pieces of advice for running a successful, invigourating bookclub are:

1) never have a question about whether people liked the book. Honestly, who cares if you liked a book? Super uninteresting question that absolutely evolves into discussion of tastes rather than critique of book.

I sent the final manuscript for Call Out Coyote into Wiseblood Books on Sunday night, the twelfth day of Christmas. Except edits from Wiseblood, it looks like this. I can confidently say this is the best, complete collection of poems I’ve ever written. Coming your way in 2026.

A Ghost in the Grey by John McMeans A Ghost in the Grey by John McMeans... a work published on The Clayjar Review.

So my morning consisted of pulling my toddler’s Hot Wheels car out of his used toilet… and having a poem published at The Clayjar Review.

Honored to be included in this wonderful group of poets. Also, just trying to keep it real.

These little prose series one offs by @bellepointpress.bsky.social are a great way to win over readers. Nice design cue, too, on the inside cover of @americangwyn.bsky.social’s β€œParricide Blues.”

I may leave this copy some place public. You’ll be hooked in the first paragraph.

There Is No Mary Problem in β€˜It’s a Wonderful Life’ George’s vision of his wife without him is essential to the film, but critics continue to miss its trueβ€”and profoundβ€”meaning.

IT'S A WONDERFUL ESSAY: The last few days before Christmas is when people usually tend to rewatch 'It's a Wonderful Life.' Can I commend to you this really superb essay we published a few years ago? It could change the way you understand that movie.

iF U C Jordan made me feel like I was caught up in the middle of a high school love triangle that forces friends to choose sides and ultimately culminates in the winner jumping on stage at the prom and singing that song as the crowd sings along.

In that scenario, I was probably Jordan.
