A staunch advocate for racial and gender equality, Burroughs was also deeply involved in the National Baptist Convention, using her platform to push for greater opportunities for Black women within the church and society.

Born to formerly enslaved parents, she overcame systemic barriers to establish the National Training School for Women and Girls in Washington, D.C., in 1909. The school provided vocational and classical education to Black women, preparing them for economic independence and leadership roles.

Nannie Helen Burroughs (1879–1961) was a pioneering African American educator, activist, and religious leader who fought for Black women's rights and education.
