Because they don’t understand it and have been bewitched by a bro-boy version it from idiots in the internet. There are MANY good reasons to follow the philosophy, but they aren’t the reasons most men think they like Stoicism.

I’m here to tell all Americans that summer in England is indistinguishable from summer in Florida. The humidity makes 30c feel like 100f. It is ungodly. And I lived in South Florida for 20 years.

I've been, VERY busy lately.

1. I'm developing a cloud based writing platform. A place to for #writers to write, and distribute from. Minimal, beautiful, intuitive.

2. I'm developing an #ADHD and #AUDHD -inspired sms-driven, voice forward reminder tool.

Ping me if you'd like access to betas.

It should be said that war, from the Stoic perspective, sometimes is the Just answer. We can read Leonidas Konstantakos on this: digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/4999/

In a way that Sagan (and all those who lamented, and still do, that the adventurous space-exploring spirit we once had has all but died) would understand: Elio is the best film Pixar has ever made. An absolute masterpiece deserving of nothing but praise.

I’ve been watching Elio for less than 5 minutes and I already know: it’s a masterpiece. #Elio #Pixar #Disney

The more I look at it, @rasmusp.bsky.social, the more I love it.

That you embodied the Stoics love of Nature (and nature) by turning an ornate MARBLE column into an ornate WOODEN column is brilliant.

I'm putting you in my Roladex for my next book. I hope you're available then.

Rasmus, this is absolutely beautiful. What a terrific job you've done. I love the intricacy of the dust jacket contrasted with the muted simplicity of the embossing on the (what I assume to be) cloth cover. Again, beautiful!

I don't think they do leave that out. I think they would say uncertainty in concerns to moral knowledge was something we had to overcome, but certainly that wouldn't be the case in all other domains of knowing.

10.06.2025 16:07 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

And yes, the Stoics imply the the Universe is understandable when they suggested that impressions were the criterion of truth -- you're right about that -- though they do not directly say this... and I think they more so meant that moral choices were possible through examination of impressions.

I see. I hope this doesn't come off as rude, but this is a poor reading of the Stoics.

The Cosmos are "providential" because, as a self-sustaining system it necessarily gives everything which is a part of it an opportunity fulfill it nature -- but this providence is categorically not human-centric.

I'm a little confused then, did you mean to say that Stoicism doesn't seem Greek because it says the "gods" are friendly to us?

10.06.2025 15:44 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Is it very Greek to believe that Gods are friendly to humans?

But also, just to keep us all honest here, don’t assume the neighbor’s you disagree with can’t be right or that you can’t be wrong. We don’t want to show off our pursuit of virtue, but we also don’t want to think we can’t unintentionally pursue it wrongly or poorly.

Slight correction from those who care about the original text:

β€œHe often acts unjustly who does not do a certain thing; not only he who does a certain thing.” β€” Meditations 9.5

πŸ‘‹ Hi. Public philosopher of Stoicism here. Marcus is conflating in this meditation. He’s (partially) wrong.

It is possible not to trouble your soul with thing you cannot choose. This is correct.

It is impossible not to have an opinion, position, or impression of something.

I can expound later.
