i had a lot of eye issues and one of the ophthalmologists smoked through the exam. And my mom's obstetrician suggested she smoke, so the baby would be smaller, making an easier birth (my sister or me, i don't know, maybe both). Both parents quit smoking by the time I was a teen.

different kids learn differently. My daughter sounded things out. My son could say ca--aah--tuh but never merge the sounds to get "cat". So I guess he learned by whole word. Both love reading, however they got to it. A good teacher tries a bunch of methods if the prescribed one fails to click.

i would join the family watching tv that i didn't really like--i'd read or do homework during this "family time" until "all in the family". I couldn't stand the tone so i'd stay in my room. Haven't had a tv in decades now.
