A bird's-eye view of a former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp showing a wide dirt pathway flanked by parallel rows of barbed-wire fences. Groups of visitors walk along the path, surrounded by the remnants of brick structures and barracks, now reduced to foundations. Green grass contrasts with the somber history of the site, as the path leads toward a guard tower in the distance.

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers.

This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.

Auschwitz took time.

A woman in her car glances away from looking in the rear view mirror. In it is a dilapidated 2024 statue. Crumbling by the side of the road. A thought bubble pops up and she says, "must... keep... going...". In front of her a rocky road laden with groups of people all carrying signs. The first is a lady holding a tino rangatirtanga flag and wearing a toitū te tiriti tshirt. Next to her an old man in a surgery smock and saline drip bag holds a sign saying 'more doctors nurses' behind him a very tall man holds a toitū te tiriti sign. Next to him another old dude holds a sign saying, 'save our southern hospital', a couple next to him holds a sign saying, 'where's our ferries', a lady behind him waves the Palestinian flag, next to her a group hold a banner saying 'protect our environment'. Opposite the road a huge permanent sign says SLOW DOWN! And in the distance more groups of people can be seen.

I’m probably not the best at slowing down but I do love a good nap.
