08.10.2025 07:56 — 👍 8 🔁 10 💬 0 📌 0When the PM says ‘we don’t owe them a living’, we should be clear that this is not a metaphor.
A living is life. And I want to live in a society in which it is clear that this is the least we owe each other, and are owed. 💞
I’d like us to aim for lives lived in dignity and with joy, personally 🤷♀️
The graphic has a violet background and white text. The text reads: Wellingtonians are you interested? Pinball wizards aren't required, but a mask is. Dividing the text is a photograph of the interior of an empty pinball arcade. There are also small graphic images of an N95 mask, and Aotearoa Covid Action's logo.
Wellingtonians - Are you interested?
An hour of unlimited play on the machines at Ye Olde Pinball Shoppe before regular opening hours on a Sunday from 10-11 am. N95 or better masks to be worn at all times and there is an air purifier. $20/person and we need 25 people to make the event happen.
This government is fucking us all over. The policy of cutting support to folk IS FUCKING BULLSHIT.
Living in a society means we live by a social contract. Part of the contract is that we all contribute towards supporting each other. Sometimes the support is financial assistance. We CAN afford it

& it matters here in Aotearoa cos just as Trump has influence, so does Sanders.
What's happening in Palestine is Israel committing genocide against Palestinians. Hamas has every right to fight back against that. Israel needs to be held accountable. The soft-peddling approach ain't going to cut it.
Sanders' statement on anniversary of 7th Oct is pretty typical of him, as I understand it - can't even say the word genocide, repeats the bullshit long-discredited tropes.
I mention this cos he often gets held up as some sort of "reasonable" alternative

It’s a familiar pattern, but we rarely connect it to the digital spaces that shape public life 🧵

The three achieved more diplomatically than the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Perhaps he should reimburse NZ for funds wasted on his UN trip last month, so those resources cover their return flights. After all, they had their own transport until unlawfully detained by another government.

Any discussion about political violence, & this event is going to be *milked* for that, must as a matter of context include discussion about the rhetoric of NZF and ACT & the impacts it has already had. This is pure projection from Peters, no one in leftwing spaces is even close to either of them.

Cartoon. Title: Youth 'Pep' talk... A tiny Luxon is in the hall talking to young people. He's standing on a stool with his hand casually in his pocket lecturing a room of youth. He's saying, "The world doesn't owe you a living! BUT... if you grow up to be a landlord..." In the audience over 20 young people with varying expressions react to his speech. One in particular is looking at us with a distinct angry face.

It's 2025 and our economic model is still reliant on maintaining a decent bufferstock of unemployed people. This model was *designed* to ensure that employers have the upper hand (and labour could be uberised). Govt distract us from this reality by bashing beneficiaries and abdicating responsibility

Throwing a brick through a window is criminal behaviour already, btw. Before anyone gets ideas of using this event to suggest changing the law on lawful/not lawful protests.

So where does the “only 4300” number come from?

IWCNZ calls on the NZ Govt to act with integrity: recognise Palestine, uphold international law, and end silence in the face of injustice.
