Famous NC Tree Hosts β€œIncredibly Unique” Swift Roost Chimney Swifts adapted to humans long ago. The discovery of a natural roost site on a college campus underscores all the ways we’re pushing swifts to the limit again.

One of the few reports that we could find of Chimney Swifts roosting in trees (rather than manmade structures) was by John James Audubon himself. So yeah, the UNC roost is pretty amazing. nc.audubon.org/news/famous-...

Very cool bird thing happening at UNC right now: 1000+ Chimney Swifts roosting in the school's most famous tree.

This used to be normal, before the widespread clearing of eastern old growth forests centuries ago. But now is exceedingly rare.

Any bird people out there have experience with Chimney Swifts nesting/roosting in trees or other natural structures? Trying to get a feel for how rare this is. #birding #ornithology
