We (scientists/scholars) are so far from being ready to change the way we produce and deliver "knowledge". We're like hamsters in a wheel, running for the next grant, the next paper, the next sign of recognition. The only thing we can say as a community is "save research" or "preserve funding".

Status, class, and the crisis of expertise By celebrating "common sense" over expert authority, populism performs a dramatic status inversion. It gifts uneducated voters the power of knowledge and deflates those who look down on them.

Status, humiliation, and expert knowledge

A must-read for my fellow experts who want to better understand why so many people proudly reject what we have to offer in favor of common sense.

It is really a nice piece Serge, thanks. It is also very interesting for all scholars willing to reflect on the petty fights we are all part of .....

Masud Husain always writes such thoughtful editorials. At its core, the issue is trust. In the minds of politicians (perhaps of the public ), researchers are often seen as mere spenders of public funds without tangible returns—if not suspected of siphoning money for their benefit.

There's a movement in neuroscience suggesting we should be pursuing bigger bets with larger teams. I think there's a case for doing a bit of this, but I think it's a bad idea to prioritise it for two reasons, and a good case for saying we should be moving in the exact opposite direction. 🧠🧪

We mainly discussed ideas from this paper doi.org/10.1016/j.ne..., but also touched on questions related to basal ganglia functions. My French accent is unbearable, but thanks to Paul for making it fun and the opportunity to share some ideas that have intrigued me over the years!

First post on Bluesky!

Had a great time chatting with @braininspired (Paul Middlebrooks) on his podcast about the conceptual and experimental issues related to the perception of time, and how Bergson's philosophy of the living could be helpful.

Thanks Ben! The starting point of this view is the repeated observations that animals spontaneously use their body in duration estimation tasks, instead of internalizing this process without moving ....glade you enjoyed the discussion
