A black and white long-haired cat sitting in a relaxed pose on a light-colored couch. The cat has green eyes and a somewhat unimpressed expression. Its hind legs are splayed out, and one of its white hind paws is resting on a textured pillow, the other is hovering in air. The cat is leaning on his left front paw. The background includes a bookshelf filled with books and an orange and white egg chair.

I think that's the general argument and I hear it. Just not fully convinced by it or its relative importance.

nothing like reviewing a half-assed, unedited, stretched out paper produced by a collaboration of bigwigs that's full of grammatical errors, typos, font changes, copy-paste massacres and doesn't even bother to define the key concept under study

i can imagine, yet... i once tore three major ligaments around my right ankle in a rock climbing accident and all the peaks around me heard my screams. as it happened and for another day all the way down the mountain. i'd personally rather stub all my toes back to back.

Unfortunately framing transparency as an unconditional public good has consequences for our ability to incentivize thinking.

when we want to criticize adults for being "less than", we don't need to do so at the expense of children

This is also my main holdup about elevating concerns about publication bias above problems of poor design, noisy and/or biased data, noncommittal, unprogrammatic, one-off research, and dichotomania.

Transparency about poor inferential practices does not relieve us of the responsibility of not engaging in such practices in the first place. Wish we stopped attributing higher moral value on transparency than doing diligent work and explicitly aiming to minimize the reporting of invalid inferences.

Retraction Watch has covered the problem of the β€œnational IQ” database. Should be noted I’m far from alone in working to remove these publications. The spreadsheet of pubs which use NIQ - linked to in the article - was started by @kohngregory.bsky.social; a project also worked on by Cathryn Townsend
