It's a labor issue, frankly, and publishing through Amazon — hell, posting Amazon links! — should be seen as scabbing. It's the 21st freaking century, we don't need or deserve the monoculture that has been foisted upon us and we certainly don't need to support it even when it promises easy answers.

Every time I post something about how shitty Amazon is, I hear from people complaining about no alternatives — that is literally what Amazon *wants* you to think! But it is not and has never been true! A cursory bit of research can reveal so much, but again: it isn't 'convenient' and Amazon is.

Amazon sells convenience and that's a hard habit, once acquired, to kick — but this isn't and has never been a ~convenient~ industry. Even if it were true that agents/publishers "aren't opening the mail" (and it isn't, at all) it wouldn't excuse using Amazon when sustainable alternatives do exist.

There are *so* many other places to have your book published on your own, including IngramSpark and BookBaby — places that distribute to actual brick and mortar bookstores, that aren't engaged in predatory business practices, that aren't burning the planet down in an effort to enrich one guy.

I did my good deed for the day, I patiently talked to one self-published author and then another about why Amazon is bad for bookstores and bookselling and writers — and genuinely neither of them knew! Anything about why Amazon is bad! Both thanked me for telling them and swore to change their ways!

Trying to figure out how many ways we can flash the red lights here. This was NEVER EVER ABOUT BOOKS. Books were the tool.

So, fun update: I'll be interviewing Jonathan Lethem onstage for the opening event of the O+ Festival in Kingston next Friday (10/10) at 7pm. The festival runs all weekend (Fiery Furnaces! Charlene Kaye! Kool Keith!) and is pay-what-you-can — highly suggest you come through, if you're in the HV!!

It basically says - your copyright means nothing unless it's our specific and narrow definition of it which has no actual legal basis. I'm amazed author unions are actually going along with this.

Anyway, for the uninitiated, this list is not "I'm gonna read all these books this month" but like all good travelers I pack heavy when it comes to books. I hope you're reading some eerie stuff this fall, and that you'll let me know about it!

Gonna try to get the backlist entries up there in the next little while, too. Thinking that these little pieces are going to, at some point, deserve a stitch-up — but I can barely tolerate thinking about writing my novel right now, let alone short stories, so... to all things a season.

god this really ties into... something that is really endemic to men, especially older men, is a guy will do something inexplicably weird and then you will slowly realize that it's part of an insanely convoluted Personal Plan that he has been thinking about and living in for like a decade...

Oh and isn't Paul Mescal playing both Hamlet and his wife in the new one?

That last part is something that anyone can step up to do.

TRACKING things matters. It's powerful.

Frankly ditto Lupita for US. Turns out I'm a sucker for multiple performances in the same flick, I guess.

Also, Rockwell deserved an Oscar for this movie, and anyone who has seen it knows I'm correct.
