We have to be talking more about bad contracts, and that being published isn't the grand prize folk think it is. There are a lot of bad actors out there and they'll all convince you it can't be done any differently because it suits them for you to believe it.

i remember when my colorist on a book dropped out and when the editorial team asked me for another rec i told them that their schedule was not feasible or healthy for any working comics professional and then a week later they only replied to say "good news! we found a new colorist :)"

I know a lot of dark shit about publishing because for the past year straight people from all parts of the comics pipeline have been telling me how the system abused them. There is a better way - it just does not benefit those who got theirs.

Tired of my labor and the labor of those around me being abused. We owe it to ourselves to set best practice standards so we all know what each step of our job entails and how to properly account for it so that everyone involved can be STABLE.

A few years ago, I got told I was being difficult because I wanted to pay a colorist a decent page rate on the book I was pitching

It is insane that the best paying jobs I've had in comics were from other artists paying me out of their own pocket because they actually value labor. Meanwhile, million-dollar companies will refuse to pay a living wage bc they know they can find someone else to exploit

A Big 5 publisher once came to me to do background inks and offered $20/page. When I asked for more, they ghosted me. It makes me sad because it meant that they found someone else either willing or forced by their circumstances to say yes

If you are an “established” creator, I would love to hear the sales (and royalty) numbers for your best selling books. I want to know how much you got. I want to know how long you had to do it, how often your editor was in touch, how many hours were allocated to designing your book

Publishers need us more than we need them. Without us, they would be able to do nothing. The only way to survive what is coming is to build it back sustainably, together, and without ego.

If they can’t exploit our labor, they will exploit the labor of our peers. I am so sorry you had to deal with that

I literally haven’t been hired by some companies for 6 years after I told them I was sick and couldn’t do last minute deadlines any longer- I am physically unable to. I’ve been in and out of hospitals with 1 major surgery and still in recovery. This industry is unhealthy and grinds people down.
