So many people did me good turns by being really upfront with me. This is validating - I don’t want to sound like an angry old man yelling at a cloud.

I hope in the years since I have grown into an alright individual but time will tell

I was also in a SUPER funky and fucked up situation with a pub where I couldn’t work with anyone else for the past 8 years so I had to self pub, but GUESS WHAT. The kill fee has been doled out, my books are open, get on in here.

I legitimately like self publishing books because I’m a control freak and it’s what makes me the most money and allows me to fund my next project - but I live on like $32k a year (my spouse also freelances) and work 12 hour days. Not a possible or wanted life for many.

My secondary hot take is that you need to decide if you like making comics for money, attention, or for yourself - because all of those are wildly different metrics of success and two of them don’t require you to financially set fire to your life (for at least 10 years)

I’m begging the people in comics who make “money” to publish their numbers & be transparent. Privately talking with me is really great, I feel privileged to have those conversations, but you have also gotta take action publicly. Our wages have stagnated for decades, & it doesn’t have to be this way

There were days I would turn to Rob and be like “they know I know how much some people get paid there, right?” Or “they know I know it’s not always done like this, right?” Because it really did often feel like I had worked at two different publishers despite them being the same publisher
