Having one person out of fifty win the competition allows them to get basically the same results for showing a forced death march on television every year but now they can act in bad faith as the good guys who are giving these young men a great opportunity every year.

The game is illogical and being done in bad faith. If you execute 50 guys who are important to society every year to show everyone else how much power you have, you’re a dictator. But if you do basically the same thing but pretend it’s a game and let one guy “win”, now you can play benefactor.

I haven't seen the film yet, but imho with an authoritarian regime, the logical thought process is usually thrown out the window to focus solely on decisions that consolidate power and control. The way I see it, killing 49 able bodied men isn't logical, it's a power flex and a warning to the masses.
