The spine of a copy of The Poetical Works of Longfellow.
Among the many remarkable volumes on my mom’s bookshelves is this copy of Longfellow’s poems that my grandmother, a Polish immigrant to England, received as a school prize in 1924 My mom says that my grandma could quote chunks of The Song of Hiawatha from memory. I was destined to be an Americanist!
