She learnt the language later in life, stating that translating “almost entirely occupied her time for many years past”. Among the many remarkable volumes on my mom’s bookshelves is this copy of Longfellow’s poems that my grandmother, a Polish immigrant to England, received as a school prize in 1924 My mom says that my grandma could quote chunks of The Song of Hiawatha from memory. I was destined to be an Americanist!
