๐ New review on 24-h movement behavior assessment using #accelerometers!
102 studies across all ages show huge variation in protocols โ from wear-time rules and epoch lengths to cut-points and devices.
๐๏ธ Harmonization is key to make results more comparable across studies and countries.

In a study of 21 wearables on the treadmill, authors found significant effects of walking speed, wear position, and age on accuravy. Many wearables track steps reasonably well, independent from being a commercial or research-grade device.

๐ฏ Testing the accuracy of 21 #algorithms for estimating sedentary time with wrist-worn #wearables revealed only 5 (24%) were within 10% of the gold standard. Two machine learning ๐ค and three posture-based cut-points performed best.
Great contribution to identify precise algorithms for wearable data!

sa B Tornberg is an Associate Professor @lund-university.bsky.social ๐ธ๐ช & head of the Physical Activity & Exercise for Health lab. She is experienced in exercise physiology and wearables, and aims to contribute to measure & analyse physical activity smarter & more consistent๐ก
Why is #validation essential for wearable-use in research?
Not all #wearables are created equal. Their validity depends on context such as target behavior, sensor placement, and assessed population. Therefore, validation studies are crucial to improve feedback and ensure measurment accuracy! ๐ฏ

A study in patients with central disorders of hypersomnolence compared actigraphy algorithms versus 24โฏh polysomnography. The authors found a partly underestimation of nighttime sleep and a clear overestimation of daytime sleep and 24-h sleep. Caution for diagnosis.
