Net zero by 2050 to limit warming to 1.5Β°C. That may have been plausible 10 years ago, but the continued rise of emissions means that there is effectively no carbon budget left for 1.5. It is cumulative emissions that drives warming. 1/6 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Film poster for One Battle After Another
Watched Paul Thomas Andersonβs latest, One Battle After Another, yesterday. Apart from being a great & gripping story, itβs very politically interesting. Says a lot about the current political moment (particularly in the US) when moderate positions become ever more difficult to justify. 1/4

The contemporary setting normalises seeing both the repressive nature of state violence and the political struggle against it as unexceptional. This contrasts with depictions of historical struggles (civil rights, Vietnam War etc) that often show that period as exceptional. 4/4

1. Resisting the capitalist & racist state is presented as natural and moral, a given. 2. Even when such resistance is violent itβs obviously morally justified. 3. The state will use psy-ops to justify and enable its violence. 2/4

New threats target land and environmental rights defenders
Land and environmental defenders face extreme violence, criminalisation and lack of protection around the world, with 146 killed or disappeared in 2024
Grief burns into rage as 146 people were murdered in 2024 for defending land and a livable planet. Their courage exposes the cowardice of governments and corporations that let this happen. We mourn them, honor them and demand an end to this violence. πβπ

4/5 This is not a forgotten working class crying for attention from government. Nor is it an innocent & inclusive display of national pride. It takes wilful, faux naivety to believe that it is equivalent to symbolising a shared belonging.

This is not trivial either because this is how mediated meaning is created
The vast majority of people will not have been on the ground or know people who were and will rely on the media to tell them what happened
This is how the far right is hyped and normalised

Aside from the frothing racism of these people, what is really grim about this is the idea that government are powerless to change culture. If your constituents think these things *they are wrong* and you need to explain why. It's not actually your job as an MP to rubber stamp fascism.
