Depressing.

Frankly, I think the main thing crippling the Democratic Party is my generation's irony and resulting political passivity (cf. Barack Obama).

I'm sure that's true - The level of increased living standards that generation experienced was like nothing we've ever seen, and might only be rivaled by Gen Z's post-AI era.

But I do think GenXers have uniquely surreal experience, which is maybe why we're such a political non-factor.

There's a pre-information age world and post one. We GenXers grew up through both sides of it. It's a very surreal way of having to make sense of things.

Christmas present for me: Wizards and Glass is far and away my favorite.

The prequel is somehow the climax of the series. I enjoyed the final three books immensely but they were anticlimactic after W&G.

Do you think those anachronisms were a conscious stylistic choice or did his editor drop the ball?

I think what bothers me are some of the odd anachronisms, especially in the case of Charlie. Maybe I'm being overly picky but at one point I remember Charlie saying "in a pig's eye," which is an expression no American 17 year old has said in 40+ years.

Trump's about to do his best to overthrow the constitutional order and commit crimes with SCOTUS-guaranteed immunity, and I'm supposed to be worried about an 80-year-old using his last bit of political power to protect his son from it all.

The Chuck Klosterman episodes are bar none my favorite episodes of @billsimmons.bsky.social podcast.

Also, if you grew up in the 90s, highly recommend Chuck Klosterman's book on the 90s.

Perhaps Arendt's most sanguine description of political action. But in later years she recognizes that - as we'll soon see - action can just as well be applied by tyranny to change realities.

It's why I've increasingly come to value work's stability over agency in the current political world.

Perfect timing.

I've been working my way through the entire extended series. Recently finished Salem's Lot and Low Men in Yellow Coats. Closing in on the end of Wizard and Glass (Susan, you deserved so much better than to be destroyed by shrews, predators, and fools).

Please be careful of spoiler.

We keep thinking that but they somehow end up pretty competitive every game. At one point I thought the Hornets where going to blow them out.

If Cade's out though, it might not be pretty.

Yes.

Hornets - win (payback)
Magic - loss (away game & Duren usually performs badly against them)
Raptors - win (home)
Grizzlies - win(assuming Ja still out)
Pacers - win (highly motivated for NBA cup game - Pacers not as into it this year)
76ers - loss (back-to-back post-emotional win)

Detroit Pistons off to best 15-game start in years. They're growing up Don't look now but the Detroit Pistons are off to their best start in years thanks to their young nucleus growing up, including Jaden Ivey.

β€œWhat we went through last year, and I keep saying it, it was painful. It was painful to go through that. We cherish every single win.”

It’s been years since the Pistons have generated this kind of early-season momentum. They’re growing up.

PISTONS DIGEST: After a wild week (3-1), Pistons surge to No. 6 in NBA defensive rating The first two championship eras of Pistons basketball were built on the defensive end and Bickerstaff worked wonders there in Cleveland, transforming the Cavs into an elite defensive unit. The Pistons...

The Pistons are coming off a week where they were thisclose to going 4-0. Their defense rose from 14th to 6th over that time all while they've played the NBA's busiest schedule to date. This week's Pistons Digest:

Once this is achieved - as Arendt suggests - they can make reality whatever they want it to be.

The disturbing thing is that no reactive movement can overcome this approach - you have to hope the existing frameworks of reality can hold and outlast them.

I tend to see the overall strategy of the right-wing epistemic economy as something closer to the post-Totalitarianism presented in Forever Flowing, where the goal to achieve a nihilism and cynicism within the broad citizenry regarding the possibility of objective facts.
