Just want to flag that we have observed something similar to what @obtusatum.bsky.social noted below. ICE has ~tripled the detained population at Dilley over the last 4 months.
Oct. 01-Nov. 10: 457 avg. detainees per day
Dec. 27-Jan 22: 1,332 avg. detainees per day

The layoffs at WaPo also hit their software engineers. Its a tricky situation because they were negotiating their first contract. They worked diligently for years and organized the second largest software engineering union in the country. Just awful

I expected the cuts would be bad but I'm honestly stunned and sickened seeing how many great journalists the Washington Post just lost. People who nailed huge investigations, documented war zones, exposed horrific crimes, dropped all at once for failures they did not cause.

NEWS: The cuts were so severe that at least one department head asked to leave The Post rather than be included in the planning.
Peter Finn, The Post's international editor, requested that he be laid off once he learned about the scope of the cuts to his section.

DHSβs account of two Venezuelans shot by border patrol falls apart in court: βA smear campaignβ
Immigration officials said agent shot two βvicious gang membersβ in Portland, but records obtained by the Guardian reveal US prosecutor contradicted claims
After Border Patrol shot two people in Portland, DHS claimed they were "vicious gang members" tied to a past shooting.
But records I obtained reveal a US prosecutor has since directly contradicted DHS, saying, "We're not suggesting he is a gang member." My dive into how DHS' claims have collapsed:

DHS said that the woman CBP shot in the chest in Portland was βinvolvedβ in a gang shooting.
Her ~involvement~ was that suspected gang members sexually assaulted and robbed her.

The average daily population at Dilley, the family detention center that held 5-year-old Liam Ramos, is up to 867, according to new federal data.
There's currently active cases of measles at Dilley and lawyers say their clients are on lockdown.

And, while it's important to continue to understand who's in immigration detention, I often worry that continuing to point out the percentages of those with no past or pending convictions galvanizes a conflation of the immigration and criminal legal systems.

After a few weeks delay, ICE just released new detention statistics. They show 70,766 people in detention as of 1/26/2026. I believe this is the first time this data source has reported a detained population over 70k.
