'Britannia once both far and near
For common sense was famous;
But now, surrounding states we hear,
Call her an ignoramus.'

She had me in tears in Bennett's 'A Woman of No Importance' (1982), reminded me so much of my mother.

That's a lovely tribute Colin.
We saw him perform with Roger McGough sometime in the 80s, first poem they did was Edwin Morgan's 'The First Men on Mercury'.
Can't find my favourite poems of his online, I'll have to fish out my copy of 'The Mersey Sound'!

Haha!
Let us know what you think.
Slightly tangential, but my brother-in-law reads 'Jack Reacher' books, & finds it hilarious that everyone who encounters the character instantly has an internal monologue estimating Reacher's height & weight.

Excited to receive this from my good friend Trevor Grahamslaw, his exhaustively researched history of the Cumbrian market town of Wigton.
Mainly set in the Georgian era of the Hanoverian Kings, it's a labour of love, lavishly illustrated from his vast collection of photographs.

Astonishing film, panned on release & Laughton didn't direct again, more's the pity.
Some stunning imagery, Shelley Winters in the river, Mitchum pursuing the children in the cellar, & his animal howl of frustration.
I've never read the book, some film critics said the film didn't do it justice!

Why is he even being given a platform?
The media enabling a national death-wish.

Got to say, although I'm only a rank amateur, I'm very fond, or as fond as one can be, of extended clauses myself.

'...after an infinity of elaboration, the thing that he wanted to say would sometimes emerge at last trivial and unimportant - as though in despair he had let his treasure go, because he could not haul it up far enough into the light...'

Hugh Walpole on James, from 'The Apple Trees' (1932).

Sounds like a definition of James himself.

But me & Chris Baldick will fight any gothic historian who says so!
I know, I know, we're all living in the expanded gothic aesthetic now.
Howsabout proto-philosophic-science fiction?
I did say I was being pedantic, & it's a slow sunday.

Not strictly 'gothic'.
(Dr Pedant strikes again).

My favourite castle, a wonderful location, & it sends out a clear 'you shall not pass' message.
But yes, Redcap hefting down stone blocks at the unwary calls for a certain caution.

The cover of the June 1969 issue, #191, of the science fiction magazine 'New Worlds', showing an image of 'Jerry Cornelius' as painted by the artist Mal Dean.
Cornelius is shown in front of a Rolls Royce, wearing wide flared trousers, and gnawing on a femur.

A friend used to let me have his old Marvel issues, which I had to smuggle home as my mam didn't approve of 'horror comics'.
Consequently, I didn't always see a storyline resolved.
I can remember Strange 'on the run' in his astral state, & it was the weirdest thing I'd ever read; hope he got away!

Michael Caine hated that USA poster for 'The Italian Job', he said (quite rightly) it gave an entirely wrong impression of what kind of film it was.
