Picture of my presentation abstract from the brochure. Titled Wolf at the Gate: A Dream of Resilience in the Face of Uncertainty. Abstract: I had a vague recollection of a news story celebrating the trophic cascade more than twenty years after wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park. It was a triumph for conservation, biodiversity, and for wolves in the wild. It was titled something like “How Wolves Change Rivers,” a provocative title that stuck with me, but that I never looked into much further. Then, recently I had a dream of a wolf and a muddled memory of that story, a book from my childhood, and an older dream with deep mythological connections began weaving together in my imagination. In a recent publication I wrestled with the ideas of conservatism, on all sides of our political spectrum. I have also long been struck by the play between the words conservatism and conservationism. Where do we conserve in the world and in inner life as a result of fear or discomfort, as a reactionary move, and where do we conserve as a act of resistance and resilience, as an act of reciprocity?
In this plenary, we will look at the example of the wolf, in myth and fairy tale, in dream images, in art, in nature, and in the conservation movement. How can this image of the wolf help us to move from a conservative view to one of conservation, one that supports and encourages biodiversity even in the face of fear and uncertainty? The wolf comes alive in these stories, enlivening a part of the psyche that may be demonized or relegated to the confines of a nightmare we just can’t face. What can an ecology of fear or a politics of uncertainty gift us? If we can let the wolf take its natural place in the wild and the wilds within, we begin to see rivers deepen (archetypally and in nature), paths to resilience renewed, and how interconnected we are to one another and the world we call home.

It’s an honor to give this plenary at the @labrc.bsky.social Ecopoetics and Environmental Artivism conference. So pleased to have the opportunity to present some new work from a thread of an idea, frayed from my recent publication (pictured below). What better way to spend the day?

Public programming builds imagination and learning in the young, keeps the public (especially many who may not have other access) informed of local, state, national, and international news, culture gifts, the arts, and more, entertainment and knowledge that is vital in times like these.

Public media is important to so many and in about a week, the current continuing resolution is set to expire so funding for these important resources could be at risk. I hope you will join me in trying to keep these available to all. The pledge links to letters to congress, a petition, and more.

I don’t know about you, but I grew up on public television and public radio. Back then, we had an old tv with an antenna to pick up the local station and now I listen to the podcasts daily. Today is protect public media day, please, take the pledge, write, and sign!
