Supreme Court clarifies rules for sentencing credits While the decision says judges can consider the time offenders need for treatment when determining sentences, it doesn’t engage with realities of corrections

The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that even though sentences can take rehabilitative programming into account, enhanced sentencing credits should be granted for time spent in a mental health facility. @journodale.bsky.social reports. nationalmagazine.ca/fr-ca/articl...

The claims here are instead like others challenging the executive's power to impose government-wide personnel policy, not "any [one] personnel action," claims which have remained in district court. E.g., Feds for Med.
Freedom v. Biden, 63 F.4th 366, 369 (5th Cir.) (en banc), vacated as moot, 144 S. Ct. 480. When reckoning with this case law, defendants vague out. The do not attempt to show how the facts of this case compare with the first string of cases, instead merely saying that plaintiffs never "distinguish the facts of their case" from those of Fausto, Elgin, or Veit (Defs.' TRO Opp. 14). Plaintiffs plainly did, and do so again

β€œWhen reckoning with this caselaw, defendants vague out” is a great line.

AI search engines cite incorrect sources at an alarming 60% rate, study says CJR study shows AI search services misinform users and ignore publisher exclusion requests.

Columbia Journalism Review tested eight generative AI search tools and found their answers were wrong 60% of the time, and the paid ones actually fared worse than the free ones.

Meanwhile, millions of people trust the way they present total bullshit with confident language.

Ontario (Attorney General) v. Working Families Coalition (Canada) Inc. - SCC Cases

Supreme Court of Canada (5:4) dismisses Ontario v Working Families right to vote appeal. Expanded third party spending limit infringes s. 3 of Charter. Disproportionate as it allows political parties to drown out other voices for whole legislative year decisions.scc-csc.ca/scc-csc/scc-... #SCC

First time I've seen a case have 6 seperate applications for leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. Even though it was an unusually long wait for the decision on leave, no surpise seeing them all granted. #SCC

The Supreme Court granted leave to appeal today in John Howard Society vs SK. When inmates are charged with disciplinary offences, does guilt only need to be established on a balance of probabilities even though it can result in longer incarceration? Here's the SKCA decision: canlii.ca/t/jtjr0 #SCC

I hope we start seeing more stats like this for lower appeal courts well. We have hunches about how the justice system works, the number of self-reps, how they fare etc, but great to see it in more concrete terms. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic... #SCC
