People volunteer or show up to protest or do direct action in no small part because it is fun. Being together is fun. Figuring things out is fun. Seeing small wins is fun.
We live in denial of this, and devalue the importance of fun in the sustainability of movements. It is the keystone.

Horses used “properly” against protesters are terrifying. They can just be made to menace & not even charge, & crowds will often comply.
This mishandling of them is an affront to the species (as is any police use), & ineffective at achieving crowd control. The cops on foot seem afraid of them

This is such a disorganized cop action. They can’t secure the scene, are obviously nervous, don’t seem to know who’s in charge (or where the jefe is), they’re misusing the horses tactically & relentlessly pulling on their bits. Their chaos is dangerous.

Another benefit to “performative” protest is—it’s practice.
How to move in a crowd. How to help block traffic. What shoes are best & what is needed or not in their bag. How to talk to strangers. How to see riot cops & not panic. Noticing legal observers+first aid givers. Feeling strength in numbers

I just watched it as a stop motion & noticed there was some white gas close to the ground before the canister of yellow smoke started smoking.
