Again, this is the kind of shit you do if you’re stupid enough to think all you’ll do is terrorize people without radicalizing a *significant* number of them against you

ICE looted their restaurant and tried to break into the safe. News chopper footage caught them backing their cars up to the door and carrying out cases of food.

Madison people, if you’re looking for an indoor activity today, Day 2 of #MadEx (comic & pop culture expo) runs until 4pm at the Alliant Energy Center & I’m vending. If you need me to sweeten the pot, my booth neighbors are a bunch of mermaids doing community outreach including free photo ops πŸ˜„

Omar's GFM was shut down and all the money returned--they've had to start from scratch while being attacked, displaced, & starved to death in Israel's genocide. Please help if you can, Bsky keeps deleting/marking them as spam:

Great column: "The straightforward explanation for Trump’s Confederacy fetish is that he’s a virulent racist who would’ve enslaved people himself."

And it infuriates and depresses me that people are just casually denying themselves that

I mean if you don’t like writing you can just like NOT BE A WRITER, it’s really okay

09.08.2025 15:12 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah, *writing* is honestly my favorite part of writing. Even when it sucks. Some of the most profoundly joyful times in my life have been when I was just sitting and writing and if anything I’ve been sad when the work was done

Something something Marx something alienation

Oiling the wood, tumbling the stones, drilling the shells, putting a whole piece together myself

I wouldn’t eliminate the process part for anything

09.08.2025 15:04 β€” πŸ‘ 17    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

To be clear, I think there are times when shortcutting or eliminating part of a process is good. Like when I make my wind chimes, I’m very glad I don’t have to make my own fishing line from scratch or whatever

But I love finding the shells out on beach walks, finding the wood and quartzite pebbles

09.08.2025 15:02 β€” πŸ‘ 20    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

These are fabulously wealthy man-children who never had to grow up, who think they’re geniuses because we gave them a fuckton of money and if you have money you are good and smart and who the fuck needs a process anyway

09.08.2025 15:00 β€” πŸ‘ 26    πŸ” 7    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 1

Shortcutting it is good. Skipping it entirely is better (and eliminating any labor you have to compensate)

So yeah, it’s capitalism, in a somewhat oversimplified sense. But with techbros I think it’s also what I said before: a thing you are supposed to outgrow as you mature

09.08.2025 14:59 β€” πŸ‘ 18    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I mean, I think it’s a natural human thing to want to skip the messy frustrating process part and get to the fun product. But that’s also an impulse you’re ideally supposed to outgrow

But capitalism has no use for process. There’s no quantifiable value in process. Process *costs* you

09.08.2025 14:57 β€” πŸ‘ 27    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

But these AI fucks don't want to do any of that: they don't want to go through the process of learning, of developing skills, of cultivating the ability to see what is in light of what can be. They think this process is archaic, outmoded, something that can be replaced with a tool.

09.08.2025 08:52 β€” πŸ‘ 629    πŸ” 86    πŸ’¬ 7    πŸ“Œ 7

A thing I’m trying to figure out how to write coherently about right now is that our culture has become saturated in a general obsession with product over process, often product at the *expense* of process, and one can’t really separate that from capitalism

AI being a huge symptom of that disease

09.08.2025 14:55 β€” πŸ‘ 94    πŸ” 31    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 2

Something that I have been thinking about with attribution of "PhD level intelligence" or "PhD level expertise" to a machine is that it reflects an increasing trend among these AI bros and their sycophants to want the products of highly skilled training without actually doing any of the work.

Accurate description of a PhD!

If you're the sort of person who's enthusiastic about getting a chance to make high school students read Hesiod in the original Greek, while teaching them how to parse academic articles, that's kinda messed up and welcome to the club, we have no cookies, we're broke.

09.08.2025 13:52 β€” πŸ‘ 16    πŸ” 4    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

That and that you have: a) a fucking amazing funding package; b) a wealthy family willing to slush you money; c) a spouse/partner who can support you; d) truly brain-melting amounts of debt; or e) some combination of any or all of the above

09.08.2025 05:51 β€” πŸ‘ 51    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

But yes in all seriousness it mostly just indicates a degree of willingness to focus so intensely on one highly specific thing for so long that there may be Something Wrong With You

And if there isn’t before there sure will be by the time you’re done

Ons thing that's really bugging me about the "PhD level intelligence" is that a PhD isn't a measure of intelligence, it's a measure of commitment to study and specialisation in a narrow field (and opportunity to do so).

"PhD level intelligence" isn't really a meaningful phrase

Literally a thing both my parents told me before I started grad school was that PhDs were for people too dumb to know when to quit

Both my parents have PhDs

Are Americans aware that down here in Mexico we’ve been getting bombarded for months with ads of Kristi Noem telling us to our face that we’re out welcome in the US, and that these ads even found their way into our national TV broadcasts

Because I feel like I have seen nobody mention it
