It's especially bad for us academics because according to my cursory googling AI checkers ping academic writing more than other types because of its overly formal tone 😮‍💨

yeah i mean im on the same page but if someone is reading 5000 scholarship applications the first filter they're going to run them through is an AI checker

on top of everything else to consider when I'm writing, I have to make sure that I sound "human enough" for the AI checkers. From what I can tell, this often entails drastically lowering the quality of your writing in order to "maintain varied sentence structure"
