I am walking down the street at 10pm in Hakone, in Japan. It is mostly dark and quiet, and I am alone.

I feel so relaxed and peaceful, a small reprieve to myself at the end of a challenging day.

I started a new job today, and it's kind of amazing the level of comfort that brings. I'd been employed for 22 years straight (ignoring weekends between jobs) and losing mine in July was jarring.

However, it also seems like it was maybe the best thing for me.

Depending on the nature of the travel, though, I quite like the travel part. Maybe not 100% of all of it, but I generally enjoy flying and I'd love to do a real train trip someday, and I love road trips so much.

This is true for my kids too. I took their mom’s name, not the other way around. Their mom’s “maiden name” is their last name.

(I also haven’t found a masc version of “maiden name” to describe my pre-marriage name)
