Figure compares path symmetry and asymmetry with graphs showing 'Path I' and 'Path II' and 'Underlying parameter change in a (e.g. a stressor)'. There are diagrams showing healthy to ill state changes, with 'Path I' and 'Path II'.

Integrating complexity theory into mental health research may reveal unique resilience dynamics and inform more effective, individualized interventions.

Path Asymmetry in Complex Dynamic Systems of Psychopathology This article illustrates the assumption of path symmetry in current theories of psychopathology and calls for the development of dynamical systems of mental illness that incorporate asymmetry.

Thrilled to share a new paper in @jamapsychiatry.com on path asymmetry in complex dynamic systems of psychopathology! jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

I'm excited to share a new preprint with @tfblanken.bsky.social, Han van der Maas, & Denny Borsboom!

We discuss the striking (implicit) assumption of path symmetry in current theories of psychopathology, which is misaligned with complex dynamical systems.

Against Language Barriers: A Call to Protect International Education in Dutch Academia

An open letter supporting the international bachelor’s psychology programs threatened for cuts. Proceeding with these cuts would damage some of the most important and impactful psychology departments globally. #supportdutchpsychology

Four large Dutch universities, including Leiden University where I work, have decided to throw international psychology bachelor programs under the bus in an effort to appease the rightwing government.

Here's my blog why this is a terrible idea.

Reduced budget cuts still ‘disastrous’ for Dutch universities Agreement between coalition and opposition parties to reduce budget cuts does little to assuage sector leaders’ fears

Headlines are often a bit exaggerated. But this one is sadly spot on 🔥

The reduced budget cuts are indeed still *DISASTROUS* for Dutch universities. (And for Dutch economy and society and young researchers) 🤯

Graph of the day. For those wondering whether the over-performing Dutch universities need more or (even) less funding. This red line is the government investment per student. More, not less, funding is needed.

Using network analysis we go beyond depression severity and focus on the specific role that symptoms may play. Taking the interdependencies between symptoms into account, we could reveal three symptoms to be uniquely predictive of remission: retardation, hypochondriasis, and suicidality.
